Ionic liquids: phase diagram characterisation with combined SAXS-WAXS

چکیده
1-alkyl-3-methyl-imidazolium (Cn-mim) salts are examples of ionic liquids (ILs).[1] In these salts, the cation is a bulky organic molecule: accordingly, due to factors such as the hindered ion packing and low charge density, the melting point is relatively low compared with conventional inorganic salts. As a consequence, it is possible to synthesise ILs which are liquid at room temperature. These materials have been used as solvents for a variety of applications, such as (bio-) catalysis for green chemistry [2], electrochemistry [3] and photochemistry [4]. The ionic nature of these solvents leads to peculiar performance in the selectivity and kinetics of many chemical reactions, thus opening new routes for smart processing. These properties, together with the very low vapour pressure, good thermal stability, the high solubility of a variety of gaseous (e.g. O2, H2), organic and inorganic species and their easy handling, make this new class of materials extremely appealing for developing novel synthetic tools with a negligible environmental impact.

Lyotropic liquid crystal phases of phytantriol in a protic ionic liquid with fluorous anion.
The phase behaviour of phytantriol in the protic ionic liquid (PIL) 1-methylimidazolium pentadecafluorooctanoate (MImOF) and four different MImOF-water compositions was investigated by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS), cross polarised optical microscopy (CPOM) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). MImOF is a distinct protic ionic liquid in that it contains a fluorocarbon anion and a...

A series of 11 new protic ionic liquids with fluorous anions (FPILs) have been identified and their self-assembled nanostructure, thermal phase transitions and physicochemical properties were investigated. To the best of our knowledge this is the first time that fluorocarbon domains have been reported in PILs. The FPILs were prepared from a range of hydrocarbon alkyl and heterocyclic amine cati...
متن کاملCombining Small Angle and Wide Angle X- Ray Scattering Techniques for In-situ Studies of Particle Formation Processes in Reactive Systems Using a New Detector Prototype
Introduction To date there are still many unknowns on how particles are formed from gas phase reactive systems such as combustion. It is possible to study particles in-situ using X-ray scattering techniques: Separate applications have shown that the size distribution of soot particle can be measured using Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) [1-4] and particle structure with Wide-Angle X-ray Sca...

The effect of adding primary n-alcohols with aliphatic chains and hexane on the nanostructure of a series of 14 protic ionic liquids (PILs) was explored using small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS). PILs were investigated with primary, secondary and tertiary ammonium cations containing different alkyl chain lengths, with and without hydroxyl substitution of the alkyl chain. Forma...

MODIFICATION OF CLAYS WITH IONIC LIQUIDS FOR POLYMER NANOCOMPOSITES by Neung Hyun Kim In attempts to prepare nanofillers with enhanced compatibility with a polymer matrix, cationic and anionic clays susceptible to exchange of their interlamellar ions with a variety of other cations or anions, were selected. In order to treat cationic clay, montmorillonite, which contains sodium ions as interlay...
